Collaboration has been the driving force between some of mankind’s greatest and most innovative achievements. So, why is it so hard to get right?
Collaboration only works when every member of a team is firing on all cylinders and it’s truly poetry in motion. However, when even one member of the team isn’t on the same page as everyone else, projects fall to pieces.
Not to mention, the success of a remote team depends on quality communication and project management which is hard to find. Hard, but not impossible.
Smack Happy Design has flourished under a system that emphasizes the value of every team member, not just a single individual. The key to this system? Workast for their project management (which they playfully refer to as WKST) and a lot of hard work.
Smack Happy Design doesn’t just have one of the coolest company names out there. They’re a growing digital marketing and website design agency with a small team of professionals working on the task of creating custom websites, logos, and delving into technical SEO on a daily basis.
With a team spread out remotely, effective communication is key. As a project manager, Danielle Lera knows the value of communication and organization.
What does she do? Well if the title project manager didn’t already sound impressive, the scope of her job responsibilities is certainly cause for a bit of awe. From managing a team of writers, overseeing both long-term and short-term projects, handling weekly status updates and ongoing projects for over twenty-five clients, and more. With all of that on her plate, Workast has been a major asset in her daily project management work.
Why?
Well, Workast is perfect for teams and it’s really a Project Manager’s faithful sidekick. The project manager gets all of the (well-deserved!) glory, and Workast helps keep everyone sane.
At Smack Happy Design, teamwork is what makes the dream work. The 9 professionals, both employees and contractors, work together seamlessly to get every project off the ground whether big or small. Smack Happy’s unique team-first attitude allows them to do what other agencies can’t — get the most out of everyone on the team no matter what their role is.
“Our hearts go into everything we do. Simply put, we care. The quality of our work shows through the personalized touch we each give to each step of the project management process. No matter the project — we love what we do and we want our clients to love it, too.”
Workast helps to make all that possible.
From assigning tasks to team members to personal to-dos and reminders, Smack Happy gets the most out of Workast. When working to create custom designs and websites for clients communication is key. Whether it’s a last-minute change or a single task that is needed to complete the whole project, it’s important for every team member to be on the same page.
The emphasis on teamwork was likely a major factor when it came to incorporating Workast into the company workflow. It went off without a hitch.
“We literally just added Workast to Slack and dove in.”
Before making the switch to Workast as their go-to project management app, they used Teamwork — no, not that kind of teamwork, it’s a subscription-based project management tool.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t much of a success. While it may have been a great tool for Project Managers, it simply didn’t suit the company and the team members that had to do the work.
It was too complicated for the entire team to use. Developers and designers would have to dig through unnecessary details before they were able to find what they were looking for. Not to mention, the whole thing took up valuable time that could have been better spent elsewhere.
Danielle’s favorite Workast function?
“The ease of use from Slack. We’re a remote team, and we rely heavily on Slack to communicate. Without it, I wonder if we’d be where we’re at now."
Workast has made slack project management easy for Danielle and her team at Smack Happy Design.
"I commonly refer to our team as a “Team of Unicorns” — everyone is just so amazing, and Slack integrating with Workast has really improved how we communicate in general.”
